Millstones

My heart is just grieved. I’m going to be frank on my little corner of the internet today. It’s Alabama’s abortion ban.  In all my years of using the internet (nearly my whole life), I have never seen the internet so hostile.  I’ve seen sides to friends and acquaintances that I have never seen.  These are Christians.  Christians that I grew up with, served with, Christian bloggers. Sharing things like “men shouldn’t make decisions about women’s bodies” or “when you provide better contraception, then I’ll believe you’re pro-life.” On social media.  Smearing the name of Jesus, displaying to the world … Continue reading Millstones

He Gives Us What We Need

There’s a line in the Bible that I really like, from Psalm 81:10. “Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.” It makes me think of a mama bird flying the nest to find worms for her babies. I feel like it shows the caring, parental nature of God. “If you have a need, I will provide for you.” Jehovah Jireh. We’ve seen it time and again in Bible stories. I think if I’ve learned any lesson in the past couple weeks, it’s that God gives us what we need. In the span of the last two and a … Continue reading He Gives Us What We Need

The Man in the Glass

There’s an old poem that I always liked that goes (in part): When you get what you want in your struggle for self, And the world makes you king for day, Then go to the mirror and look at yourself, And see what that man has to say. …He’s the fellow to please, never mind all the rest, For he’s with you clear to the end And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test If the man in the glass is your friend. I think we’ve all been there. We’ve put up a very pretty front for everyone else, and … Continue reading The Man in the Glass

To the Outsider, From an Outsider

Sweet wallflower, I know you feel out of place. Too different to engage in the activities or festivities; always watching and listening from afar. You’re not the little boy with the loaves and the fishes, coming boldly to the Savior with an offering of faith. You’re not Simon Peter, cutting off an ear in fiery defense of your Lord. You’re not Paul, running back to the friends of the very Christians you killed, and you’re not David, slaying a giant and dancing in the parade. You’re more like the woman with the issue of blood, ridiculed and unclean, who silently … Continue reading To the Outsider, From an Outsider

Tips for a Peaceful Mind

Peace is so coveted in today’s world, even by the Christian. Our world quite literally screams so loudly that sometimes I have to physically stop checking social media and the news for all the angry debate that floods my consciousness. My mom always told me that I’d live a very long time for how calmly I handle things and how little I worry. I do truly believe that the Lord has given us the power of a sound mind and not the spirit of fear or worry, so here are a few things I always try to exercise whenever I … Continue reading Tips for a Peaceful Mind

Striving to Succeed, Believer?

As I’ve become more acquainted with the world and its ways I’ve found that everyone is enamored with success. Between the rock bottom of poverty and the top rung of wealth sweat and struggle most men. All fall short of where they’d like to be – even the top-rung wealthy. The politican panics when his approval rate goes down, the entertainer commits suicide at the absence of applause, the athlete cries when he loses a match. Even those in the top position agonize when they can no longer hold it. And thus is the everlasting and unattainable climb. Are you … Continue reading Striving to Succeed, Believer?

Seek Peace Wherein Ye Dwell

Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. – John 8:36 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” “Whom the Son sets free is free indeed.” For some reason that only the Lord knew, I had verses of freedom stuck in my head throughout a week of camp counseling. I’d walk my girls to and from activities or walk alone on my break and among all the TV show theme songs and folk choruses playing on an … Continue reading Seek Peace Wherein Ye Dwell

The Great Commission

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” -Matthew 16:24 I’d like you to think about heaven for a moment. Think of a land crafted for you, by Christ, where you’ll never grow old. Think of your mansion, decorated specifically to your tastes by the Carpenter with scars in His hands. Think of your voice blending with your loved ones who went on before you in one beautiful chorus like you have never heard before, because your beloved grandmother is in harmony with … Continue reading The Great Commission

Spiritual Winters

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have.  For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”  So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my Helper, I will not fear.  What can man do to me?” -Hebrews 13:5-6 I have to apologize for being so silent on here lately. I was so caught up in a schedule of school, work, church, assignments, and deadlines week after week and found myself scribbling notes into the margins of my school notebooks more often than organizing my thoughts into a blog … Continue reading Spiritual Winters

Why Did You Doubt?

But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”  And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” -Matthew 14:30-31 When I read this passage this morning, Jesus’s words to Peter sank deep into my soul. “Oh you of little faith, Why did you doubt?” Imagine the moment when you finally sit with Jesus after hearing “well done”, His arm wrapped around your shoulder, and imagine the events of your life playing … Continue reading Why Did You Doubt?
